Paul Lynch: Prophet Song

A conversation series by Ayfer Tunç and Murat Gülsoy, organized in cooperation of the Nâzım Hikmet Culture and Arts Research Center at Boğaziçi University and the Orient-Institut Istanbul.

On Friday, 28 November, at 6:00 PM, Ayfer Tunç and Murat Gülsoy will discuss Paul Lynch’s novel Prophet Song at the Orient-Institut Istanbul as part of the discussion series “Dialogues”.

The Irish author Paul Lynch received wide critical acclaim in 2023 for Prophet Song, a novel hailed as one of the most powerful works of the last decade. Nominated for the Booker Prize, the book unfolds a haunting dystopia in which a society is driven into the abyss of civil war by totalitarian forces. At its center stands a mother of four, whose struggle to shield her family forms the emotional core of the narrative. Lynch offers a precise observation of the mechanisms of power and oppression, capturing a world on the brink.

His ability to draw readers into the darkest, often claustrophobic spaces of human experience—while interspersing moments of unexpected beauty and literary grace—has been widely praised. Prophet Song is not a work of light entertainment, but a novel that opens a powerful narrative space in which vulnerability and resilience meet in unsettling tension.

For years, Ayfer Tunç and Murat Gülsoy have been engaging in public conversations about world literature, unrestricted by language or historical period. The Orient-Institut Istanbul is pleased to make its auditorium available for this series.
