Dr. Melike Şahinol is a Principal Investigator and Senior Researcher at the Orient-Institut Istanbul (since 02/2025), where she is responsible for the research area “Science, Technology, and Society”. Her research focuses on the societal implications of digitalization, particularly in the fields of work, innovation, and medicine, as well as the associated transformations of body concepts. She investigates socio-technical dynamics emerging from digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and automation, as well as new forms of human-technology interaction.

Şahinol studied Sociology, Political Science, and Psychology at the University of Duisburg-Essen and obtained her PhD in Sociology from the University of Tübingen in 2015. As part of a three-year scholarship at the DFG Research Training Group on Bioethics, she explored neuroscientific practices of human-machine adaptation, particularly in the context of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) used in stroke and ALS rehabilitation. Her work demonstrates how these technologies give rise to techno-cerebral subjects and constitute patients as cyborg subjects, following a cerebro-centrist perspective. These early studies on human-machine interactions and technological-medical subjectivation processes continue to shape her research on digitalization, innovation, and the related societal and epistemic dynamics.

Previously, Şahinol led the research field “Human, Medicine, and Society” at the Orient-Institut Istanbul (2015–2023). She has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in established journals and academic publishers. In addition to authoring monographs, she has also served as a guest editor for several edited volumes and special issues in leading academic journals. Her research has been presented at more than 50 international conferences. She has over 15 years of experience in teaching, leading interdisciplinary research projects, conducting qualitative social science studies, and organizing more than 40 international conferences, workshops, and academic events. Şahinol specializes in methodological approaches for researching vulnerable groups, particularly in medical and healthcare contexts. She is a co-founder and coordinator of the Turkish Scholarly Network for Science and Technology Studies (STS Türkiye) and is actively engaged in fostering greater networking and inclusivity in STS research.

Her current research project, “Manufacturing Practices of Medical Instruments in Innovation Clusters: A Comparative Study of Tuttlingen, Sialkot, and Samsun,” is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with over €750,000. This project examines the production and innovation of medical instruments in three global innovation clusters, focusing on the interactions between local production practices, digital transformation processes, and global innovation dynamics. It integrates perspectives from Science and Technology Studies (STS), the sociology of work and organizations, and innovation research.
