General information
The archive’s holdings are accessible for academic research and studies. Archive materials can only be used on site in the reading room of the library of the Orient-Institut Istanbul. In justified exceptional cases the library may make electronic reproductions. Permission for use is granted upon written application. The application must substantiate a legitimate interest in use. Applications must be submitted in writing (also by e-mail) to the head librarian. By submitting the application, users acknowledge the rules of use of the Orient-Institut Istanbul library. Materials must be requested for viewing at least one day in advance by e-mail. The request should contain the Kalliope signature(s) (https://kalliope-verbund.info/en/index.html) of the items in question. Permission to use does not extend to permission to publish the archive material.
Restrictions on use
Archive materials may be blocked for viewing or evaluation or their use may be restricted
- for legal reasons to protect copyright and personal rights,
- if the purpose of use can be achieved with the help of materials that have already been printed, filmed or digitized,
- if the state of preservation of the materials requires this,
- in the case of holdings that are needed elsewhere by the Orient-Institut Istanbul,
- materials (letters, postcards, manuscripts, pictures, etc.) of living individuals can only be made accessible with their permission. This also applies to recipients of letters and postcards.
Digital copies
Digitized copies are only produced by the Orient-Institut Istanbul within the scope of existing possibilities. The provision of a digitized copy does not constitute permission for publication. Such requests must be applied for separately. The digitized copies are intended for personal use only and may not be published or disseminated to third parties. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that the digitized copies are used solely for academic or private purposes and that they are not disseminated to third parties.
Reproducible digital copies for publications can be created on request. Reproduction and permission to publish are subject to a fee. Specific requests should be addressed to the head librarian.
Users are responsible for compliance with the legal provisions, in particular copyright law and the protection of personal rights.
Publication authorization
Permission to view archive materials does not include permission to publish them. The head librarian decides on permission for publication.
Publication permissions are generally only granted for scientific publications.
The use of digitized material from the archive for commercial purposes (except for scientific publications) requires special permission from the Orient-Institut Istanbul. Permission must be obtained separately for each (re-)publication by submitting an application for publication authorization.
All publications are subject to approval, including public lectures, publications in the press, radio and television as well as e-publications.
In the case of unique materials that are protected by copyright, the application for permission to publish must be accompanied by the permission of the authorized parties (the author, their legal successors or other rights holders). If other living individuals are involved, their consent is also required. Users are responsible for ensuring that these rights are observed and are liable for this.
Data processing and data protection
User and usage data is recorded and stored electronically. The Orient-Institut Istanbul’s privacy policy provides information on the purpose of data collection and the details of data processing in accordance with the applicable data protection regulations.
