Zeynep Tezer is a social and cultural historian of the early modern Ottoman Empire. Her research focuses on social marginalization, intersectionality, subaltern critique, and their literary expressions. In addition, she is interested in transimperial and transnational entanglements in the Ottoman Mediterranean during the transition to modernity.

She received her Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and History from the University of Bonn and a Master’s degree in Turkology from the University of Bamberg. She subsequently earned her PhD in History at the University of Chicago. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the European University Institute in Florence, Zeynep Tezer will start a position as a Research Fellow at the OII in October 2025.
