Medizinische Innovationen sind das Ergebnis sozio-technischer Prozesse, die in sozio-technische Imaginationen eingebettet sind. Sie entstehen im Kontext historisch gewachsener Wissenschafts- und Technologieentwicklungen sowie durch das akkumulierte Wissen, die Expertise und das handwerkliche Können innovativer Unternehmen, die in spezifischen Clustern angesiedelt sind. So hängt die Entwicklung von Clustern in der Herstellung medizinischer Instrumente nicht nur von historischen Innovationspfaden und spezifischen handwerklichen Fähigkeiten in der Metallverarbeitung ab, sondern auch von kollektivem (handwerklichem) Wissen.

Ziel dieser Studie ist es, die Herstellungspraktiken medizinischer Instrumente als Teil regionaler Innovationskulturen in geografisch verteilten, aber miteinander verbundenen internationalen Innovationsclustern zu untersuchen. Die Studie führt eine vergleichende Analyse auf Basis einer ethnografischen Untersuchung an mehreren Standorten durch, ergänzt durch umfangreiche qualitative Interviews. Dabei werden die historischen Hintergründe und Traditionen von Clustern für medizinische Instrumente sowie deren Einfluss auf die Entwicklung von Wissen in der handwerklichen Fertigung analysiert.

Der Fokus liegt auf der Beziehung zwischen internationalen Innovationsclustern und deren Auswirkungen auf handwerkliche Fertigungspraktiken in der medizinischen Instrumentenindustrie. Dabei wird untersucht, wie globale Arbeitsteilung, Wertschöpfungsketten und politische Ökonomie die Entwicklung der Herstellung medizinischer Instrumente sowie die Innovationspraktiken formen und beeinflussen. Ziel ist es, ein tieferes Verständnis für das komplexe Zusammenspiel dieser Faktoren und deren Auswirkungen auf medizinische Instrumente und Innovationen zu gewinnen.

Um diese interdependenten Ebenen zu erfassen, wird eine vergleichende Studie in drei unterschiedlichen geografischen Regionen durchgeführt: Samsun (Türkei), Tuttlingen (Deutschland) und Sialkot (Pakistan) – drei der weltweit führenden Zentren für die Herstellung chirurgischer Instrumente, die eng miteinander kooperieren. Die Studie untersucht, wie diese Cluster trotz ihrer Unterschiede interagieren.

Die enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen diesen drei Clustern, die eine zentrale Rolle in der Produktion und Innovation medizinischer Instrumente spielen, ist von entscheidender Bedeutung, da ihre Produktionsketten stark miteinander verflochten sind. Ein Scheitern bei der Etablierung und Aufrechterhaltung dieser Kooperation könnte zu Unterbrechungen oder Störungen der Innovationskette für medizinische Instrumente führen. Daher ist es unerlässlich, die Mechanismen des Innovationsaustauschs zwischen diesen Clustern zu verstehen, um die Zusammenarbeit zu stärken und technologische Fortschritte in der medizinischen Instrumentenindustrie gezielt voranzutreiben.

Während präzise Handarbeit und hochqualifiziertes handwerkliches Können in den manuellen Phasen der Instrumentenherstellung weiterhin eine zentrale Rolle spielen, erfordert die Einbindung von Hochtechnologie in fortgeschrittenen Produktionsstufen eine Kombination aus traditionellem Handwerk und modernen Technologien. Zudem gewinnen digitale Technologien und Automatisierung zunehmend an Bedeutung, insbesondere durch computergestützte Fertigungstechniken, Robotik und datenbasierte Innovationsprozesse, die die Produktionsketten nachhaltig verändern.

Diese Studie leistet einen Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung des Konzepts regionaler Innovationskulturen, indem sie Einblicke in die Vielfalt innovativer Entwicklungswege und die Verbreitung von Fachwissen durch vernetzte Innovationsnetzwerke gibt.
