A grave in the Protestant cemetery in Istanbul is a lasting memorial to the scholar Traugott Fuchs, who left Nazi Germany in 1934 and sought refuge in Turkey, like several hundred other academics whose lives were threatened in the Third Reich. But while many of his colleagues gradually left Turkey after the end of the war, Fuchs remained in his new homeland until the end of his life in 1997, teaching at İstanbul Üniversitesi and Robert College/Boğaziçi Üniversitesi for a total of almost fifty years. Filmmaker Dirk Schäfer has created this portrait, which was produced by the Orient-Institut Istanbul, against the backdrop of his own biography, resulting in a fictional dialogue between him and Traugott Fuchs. The film was previously shown to academic audiences in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Turkey, as well as at the International Turkish Film Festival Frankfurt/M. and at the Ayvalık International Film Festival.
