The field of “language” has played a decisive role in the understanding of the nation since the founding of the Republic of Turkey in 1923. From the beginning, official language policy and planning focused on Turkish as an important factor in the formation of a homogeneous nation. An analysis of discourses on the development of the Turkish language in the context of the language policy of the Republic of Turkey from 1980 to the present with regard to Turkish shows developments and tendencies. Current contributions to the debate are directed, for example, against an influence of European languages, especially English, on the vocabulary which is perceived too high. Language is seen as an essential element of one’s own group, which must be preserved as well as demarcated from and protected against other influences described as foreign. At the same time, for example, in connection with the “Year of the Turkish Language” (Türk Dili Yılı) in 2017, references are made both to the pre-Islamic past and to that phase when the Turkish language was under the strong influence of Arabic and Persian. Both are meant to refer to a past from which the Turkish language can draw today; this is in clear contrast to the early phase of language policy in the 1920s and 1930s with regard to Arabic and Persian, whereas parallels can certainly be seen as to the positive connotations of the pre-Islamic period. By analyzing current developments in the discourse on the topic of language policy from a sociolinguistic perspective, continuities and changes in constructions of nation and ethnicity can thus also be made transparent.

Linguistic Landscape of Istanbul

Linguistic Landscape research deals with representations of language in public spaces, for example in the form of street and store signs, billboards, regulatory and informative signs or graffiti. In a cooperative project between the Orient-Institut Istanbul and the University of Potsdam (Prof. Dr. Christoph Schroeder), a corpus with data from selected streets in two districts (mahalle) in Istanbul, Kumkapı and Tarlabaşı, was compiled in fall 2021. The corpus is currently being prepared for publication so that the data collection will be made available to interested researchers in the future.

In December 2023, a workshop entitled “Linguistic Landscape of Istanbul: Possibilities and Prospects” was held in Istanbul, organized by Dr. Ruth Bartholomä (Orient-Institut Istanbul) together with Prof. Dr. Christoph Schroeder (University of Potsdam) and Prof. Dr. Bülent Bilmez (İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi & İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi).
