Turkey as Migration Hub

Since Turkish “guest workers” were recruited in the 1960s, Turkey has been primarily perceived in Europe as a sending country of migrants. The fact that the Ottoman Empire was, and the Republic currently is, a destination of migrants is rarely discussed in either public or scholarly discourse. The research field “Turkey as Migration Hub” directs the focus to the multifaceted migration movements into and through Turkey. Although the transnational German-Turkish migration currently represents a major concern in this field of research, the organization of scholarly events illuminates Turkey as a destination and transit country of different migration flows from a range of (social) scientific and theoretical perspectives.
