History and Anthropology of Religion

Supervised by: Dr. Esther Voswinckel Filiz

Duration: Since 2011

The research field “History and Anthropology of Religion” consists of a loose association of research areas of both historical and contemporary relevance that deal with the anthropology and religious history of Istanbul, Anatolia, and the Eastern Mediterranean across disciplinary boundaries.

Since 2019, a particular focus of religious research at the Orient Institut Istanbul has been laid on enquiries into materialities of everyday religiosity. This includes dealing with places, spaces and the landscape as vital factors in religious practices and traditions, scholarly engagements with religious aesthetics and multi-sensorial experiences of religion, as well as the in-depth investigation of old and new things, media and materials in everyday religious life – from amulets, relics and textile paraphernalia to fragrances, dishes and substances. A monthly online working group dedicated to the theory, methodology, and ongoing research related to Material Religion, guest lectures, and the workshops The Materiality of Everyday Religiosity: Historical and Contemporary Dynamics in Turkey and Iran (June 17-20, 2021) and Material Religion in Turkey: Historical, Contemporary and Future Research Trajectories (October 2024 ) serve to intensify the academic dialogue with our colleagues, particularly in Istanbul and Turkey, but also beyond.
