My Memories of Dr. Traugott Fuchs (1969-1997)

The talk focuses on three distinct phases of Nedret Kuran’s communication and memories about Traugott Fuchs; first, from 1969  to 1971, as his student at Robert College;  then, from 1981-1984, on Fuchs as her thesis advisor, when she was preparing her PhD. thesis at Istanbul University on Turco-German Relations and the Reception of Goethe in Turkey between 1900-1983; and, finally, from 1991-1997, as  Traugott Fuchs’s colleague and supporter at Boğaziçi University. The crucial role of Professor Süheyla Artemel -Nedret Kuran’s mentor- will be underlined in this long lasting loyal friendship and mutual cooperation.

Prof. Dr. Nedret Kuran was born in Istanbul in 1949. After graduating from the German High School (Alman Lisesi), she started studying Comparative Literature at Istanbul’s Robert College in 1969. In 1971 she married and moved to Frankfurt where she studied the History of Art, Archaeology and Turkish Literature at Johann Wolfgang von Goethe University; when she came back to Turkey she graduated from Boğaziçi University in 1977. She earned her PhD. from Istanbul University on Turkish Literature and worked at Boğaziçi University from 1981-2001 in the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies and obtained her Professorship in 1998 on that subject. In 1991 she founded together with Prof. Süheyla Artemel the Center for Comparative European Culture and Art upon being rewarded a grant by the Council of Europe for their joint Research Project, entitled „A Common European Identity on a Multicultural Continent“.  She was first Co-Director (1991-96) then Director of the Center (1997-2000). From 2001-2018 she worked at Yeditepe University and became Professor Emerita in June 2008. She has published 9 books and over 80 articles in Turkish, English and German on Comparative literature, the History of Printing in Turkey, and on European Cultural Studies, with a particular focus on „the Image of the Turk in Europe,“ and in 2023, a family book on Matbaacı Osman Bey, the founder of the Istanbul district carrying his name.
